Are you getting ready to embark on a new career with a whole new position with a whole new employer? Well, kudos to you!

Starting a new career always is accompanied with an overwhelming amount of mixed emotions as you know.

  • You are nervous.
  • You are excited to get started.
  • You are nervous.
  • You are putting a great deal of pressure on yourself to perform.
  • There are expectations to achieve great things.
  • There are new people to meet.

It’s a lot to take in—we understand and have all been there. We do know one thing for certain... it will take time to get adjusted. With each new day, you will grow more confident in finding your way.

10 Best Practices for Thriving in Your New role

To help you get adjusted quicker in your new role, here is a list of 10 best practices for thriving in your new role. 

  1. Stop putting pressure on yourself to outperform.
  2. Spend this time just being a sponge—be present each day, in each conversation and just soak it all up. Be authentic and have fun!  

  3. Bring your handy-dandy notebook and pen to take notes.
  4. Write down questions ahead of time going into your first day and take copious notes. Use this book as a reference guide during your first months on the job. Do not take notes on your phone- this sets a bad example to your employer.

  5. Get to know your teammates and your direct leader. Ask questions. 

  6. Learn about your company culture and how to become involved. Company culture is the personality, beliefs and values of the organization that hopefully you were able to learn more about during the interview process.

    Get to understand the company organization and what you could get involved in. This is your culture that you get to create!
  7. Steer away from gossip and time snatchers. Don’t talk about a problem with someone who cannot fix it. Don’t complain about your team members behind their back. If you have an issue with someone, go directly to that person.

    Pass negatives up (to your leader) and positives all around. You can’t control what others say, but you can control what you say. Taking a hard stance against gossip has the double benefit of protecting your work environment and displaying your integrity.
  8. Take initiative. Your primary work focus is to carry out the day-to-day responsibilities that you are responsible for.

    As you continue to grow more and more comfortable in your role, always look for ways to help out with the miscellaneous items that aren’t in the scope of your job description. Be willing to raise your hand and help a teammate out. Remain hungry to help.
  9. Ask for feedback. Always look for ways to improve. Best way to find out how you are doing is asking for feedback. Remain coachable, no matter the position that you are in. Be coachable.
  10. Be hungry. Always ask how you can help out! See each day as an opportunity to showcase your talent and be able to help your customers!
