Are you getting ready to do some updates to your resume?
Whether you have never written a resume in your career or if you are just doing some updating for your next career move with your current employer, crafting an engaging and attractive resume is one of the more challenging aspects of a job search. However, writing your resume simply does not have to be a daunting task.
Keep in mind that you are writing your resume for your future — for your next career move and that should make you excited!
Below are 10 resume tips from a hiring manager that will improve your resume:
- Always review the active job posting thoroughly for the job that you are deciding to apply to. Thoroughly reviewing a job description will allow you to better tailor your resume to include your related skills, experiences, or educational qualifications. This will also help you tremendously to prepare for the interview.
- Identify and highlight what skills you possess that match the position that you are applying to. Be sure to showcase these skills near the top of your resume for better visibility when being reviewed by a hiring team.
- When you write about your accomplishments, give a prominent position to those that are relevant to the role you’re targeting now.
- Use critical keywords, specifically the professional, technical, and academic skills that complement the role that you are applying to. Remove any skills that are not mentioned in the job description.
- Take time to craft a well written objective and include the exact title of the exact position that you are applying to. Be very specific!
- Always write a cover letter IF the company is requesting that you are to upload one. Although some might feel that cover letters are a thing of the past, this is still not the case.
- From the top of your resume, to the bottom, make sure that your entire resume is easy to read for a hiring team. You want to be sure to use a chronological resume format and to always keep it simple. This makes it much easier for a hiring team to take notes and to ensure that pertinent information is not skipped over.
- Are you applying to a fully remote role with an organization? Be sure to list all of your remote work accomplishments. This will go a long way when a hiring manager is reviewing your resume.
- Have fun! Make it personal and always remember to update social media accounts to ensure that they match the person that a hiring team is reviewing on paper.
- Have a colleague or a professor review your resume when completed. A second set of eyes will help with proofreading.
You must remember that your resume should be a reflection of the job that you are applying to. When you are writing your resume, do not just focus on writing about your past experience or accomplishment. Write about what you are doing now and where you are ultimately wanting to be!
Ultimately, the content on your resume needs to point to where you want to be, not simply where you are right now.
