Students can “preview” a variety of firms, get a feel for different cultures, and figure out where they might fit best. You’re also building your network early. Connections made now can open doors later, even if it’s not immediate. 

Q: How should students prepare before attending a career fair? 

Preparation is key to making the most of a career fair. Start by researching the firms attending, even those you’re unsure about, and jot down a few things that stand out or spark your curiosity. Create a list of companies you want to prioritize, but stay flexible and open to new conversations. And of course, dress professionally, check the details, and support your peers. A quick “fit check” for a friend can go a long way!

Q: What should students bring with them to a career fair? 

Come prepared with several copies of your resume, a fully charged phone, and a positive, professional attitude. Your resume helps recruiters remember your conversation and follow up afterward. A charged phone is important for quick applications or connecting on LinkedIn in real time. Most importantly, bring enthusiasm. Energy is contagious and it helps create meaningful conversations. 

Q: What should accounting students wear to make a strong first impression? 

Dress for the job you want, not the one you have. A well-fitted suit is always a safe and professional choice, and sometimes business professional attire that is polished and intentional also works well. Pay attention to details: clean shoes, neat hair, and overall presentation. When in doubt, it’s always better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed. Minimal accessories keep the focus on you and your conversation. Make sure you feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing!

Q: What are the best questions students should ask recruiters? 

The best questions are thoughtful, specific, and show genuine curiosity. Ask about the types of roles the organization hires for, what skills or qualities help candidates stand out, and what success looks like for an intern. You can also ask about the types of projects interns typically work on or how teams support growth and development. Don’t be afraid to ask questions that matter to you, those often lead to the most meaningful conversations. 

Q: How can students introduce themselves confidently to employers? 

Start with a clear introduction; your name and your major are great starting points. Speak clearly and confidently, even if the environment is busy or loud, and offer a firm handshake and eye contact. Prepare a quick “elevator pitch” so you can share your interests and goals naturally. Most importantly, be yourself. Being authentic leaves a lasting impression.

Q: What mistakes do recruiters commonly see students make at career fairs? 

One common mistake is not bringing a resume or running out too quickly. Another is lack of preparation. Students who haven’t researched firms often struggle to engage in meaningful conversations. Some students may come across as disengaged (checking phones, lacking eye contact) or only focus on one company without exploring others. Small details matter, and preparation plus effort really stand out.

Q: How can students stand out if they have limited experience? 

Limited experience doesn’t have to hold you back. Sharing your story, whether it’s balancing school with work, athletics, or other commitments this helps provide valuable context. Confidence, curiosity, and strong communication skills can make a big impression. Showing a willingness to learn and being engaged in the conversation can help outweigh experience alone.

Q: What should students do immediately after a career fair? 

Follow up within 24 hours with a thank-you message to the recruiters you connected with. Personalize it by mentioning something specific you discussed or learned that shows you were engaged and listening. Connect on LinkedIn to stay in touch and continue building your network. These small steps help turn a quick conversation into a lasting impression.

Timely follow-up is critical in turning conversations into opportunities. If you’re interested in a role, make that clear and take action, respond quickly, and stay engaged throughout the process. Keep communication open and professional, and don’t be afraid to check in, if needed. Showing continued interest and responsiveness helps recruiters see your commitment.
